For 2026 we will be working from Patty Lyons' books: Knitting Bag of Tricks. We will be using both the book and workbook.

Swatch #1 still on the needles with the yarn

How to prepare:
Read the intro in both books
Read Chapter 1 in both books
Using a non-super wash wool, knit Swatch #1 following the instructions on pg 14 of the workbook. Do not cut the yarn and leave the swatch on the needles.
Program: Math time!

Calculator (the one on your phone is fine)

Knit Swatch #2 (directions are found on page 11 - and as you knit through the exercises below)

How to prepare:
Read Chapter 3 in the book.
Knit Swatch #3, #4, and #5 as described on page 44 of the workbook (you will need 3 different fibers)
Block each swatch as directed
Measure size (length and width of each swatch before and after hanging overnight
Work through Test Drive Your Fabric and complete Swatchservations on pages 44 and 45 of the workbook

Ball bands of your three yarns
Cloth/plastic measuring tape for measuring yourself and/or your sweater
Sweater that fits you well
Scale for weighing yarn and swatches (optional)

How to prepare: Read Chapter 4 in the book

Note:
You will use the same yarn for all swatches for the rest of the year (worsted weight recommended) - they should all be the same fiber, ie: all wool, all acryllic
One will need to be a light color
You will need 4 different yarns because the swatches will all be kept live
Needles appropriate for the yarn
Stitch holders or waste yarn to hold the live stitches of 4 swatches
Thin crochet cotton or sock yarn (optional) - Patty uses this to mark stitches so you could use stitch markers

How to prepare: (please note - this is different than what was shown at the April meeting)
Read Chapter 5 in the book: there are a lot of stitch descriptions that may not make sense until you do them - be familiar with what is there
Read through the exercises in the workbook and be familiar with them - we will work through them during the meeting (we likely will not finish - you will need to do that at home)

Read pages 131-157 from Chapter 6 in the book- yes, it’s a big read this time!
Do the excersise Joining a New Ball and Fixing the First Stitch on page 82 in the workbook (Swatch #1)

You will be binding off this swatch and weaving in ends
You DO NOT need to bring it to the meeting

Yarn for Swatch #10 (we will cast on during the meeting). It should be a lighter color
Small amount of two contrasting colors yarn in the same weight
Needles for knitting in the round (DPNs, magic loop, two circs - your choice)
